Revolutionizing Beer Packaging: The Volksbier

Golden A' Packaging Design Award Winner Combines Tradition and Innovation

The Volksbier stands out in the market with its unique properties. The designers have created a PET container that mimics the traditional beer mug, aiming to evoke the joy and tradition of beer drinking. The container is clear, allowing consumers to see the product in full, a courageous move in an industry where clear colour is not commonly used due to concerns about the UV light effect on beer.

The Volksbier was realized through blow moulding, a production process that allows the creation of hollow objects in plastic. The container measures 115 mm in height and 50 mm in diameter, a compact and convenient size for consumers. The aluminium lid adds a modern touch to the traditional design, further enhancing its appeal.

The design concept was thoroughly researched in focus groups, with consumers describing the packaging as traditional, joyful, and fresh. The packaging reminded male consumers of good times drinking in pubs with friends, while married males reported that it brought back memories even when drinking alone at home.

Despite the challenges related to production capabilities and the unconventional use of clear colour in the beer industry, the designers successfully brought the concept to life. They believe that the packaging solution is less costly compared to traditional cans, can be produced in-house if blow moulding technology is available, and reduces energy consumption and logistic costs.

The Volksbier is a testament to the designers' creativity and innovation, earning them the prestigious Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2015. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
